More and more frequently, administrators are caught between conflicting ideologies when controversial topics are introduced in their schools. This presentation aims to provide administrators with guidance on how to navigate the introduction of controversial topics while protecting the rights of educators. The workshop will begin by exploring the legal framework for educator rights and the various forms of protected speech, to include sample Board Policies regarding controversial topics. Participants will then examine case studies involving controversial topics, to discuss best practices for creating an inclusive classroom environment while respecting the perspectives of all students. The presentation will also delve into the importance of fostering open communication between administrators and educators and the role of policies and procedures in addressing controversial topics. Participants will leave with an understanding of their legal obligations as well as practical strategies for promoting a culture of respectful dialogue and mutual understanding in the classroom.
